What happened?

Demise of The Cosmicals

Any surrounding information about this franchise has largely faded. This is because, for whatever reason, each studio that was outsourced to make any content for the franchise seemed to have disappeared off the face of this Earth. No one has had luck trying to locate and contact them. The original studio that animated the original 80s-90s commercials and TV special was not the same one for the 1999-2002 main series. They would even swap animation studios for different commercials, which is why so many of them look very different from each other. I dunno, it’s like The Cosmicals curse every studio that touches them.

The last studio that touched them was back in the mid 2000s for the CGI reboot. Even though I don’t care about the reboot, something must’ve happened for it to be cut off mid-season with seemingly no explanation.

How could something so relatively recent become completely lost? How could something that spawned a greetings card line, a TV special, two series, and a game be so barely documented? It's scary how fast the media around us simply fade from existence like that.

Alas, The Cosmicals, in its cursed existence, never let itself finish its story before jumping ship. Lacey and I were talking about how it felt so close to reaching international stardom. It could’ve turned into this entity of long-running media like so many other IPs have become. The characters looked so brazenly marketable and ready to be turned into toys. Its space aesthetic is such a universally beloved theme for all ages and genders. It looked like a recipe for the perfectly immortal, infinitely rebootable franchise cash cow, and yet it only scraped the surface of what it could’ve been.

My guess is: it’s an unfortunate mix of all these things. Maybe if luck was on their side, or if it came out another time, the franchise would still be alive today.

Whatever was the case…. if we find more about The Cosmicals, it gives hope for preserving other lost media and remnants of a bygone era.
