What was The Cosmicals about?

What was the cartoon about?

* Disclaimer: we will only be talking about the 1999-2002 animated series on this page, as that is the most remembered part of the franchise and the version that we would likely find the most content of. We hope to talk about other iterations if we find more info.

From what I remember, The Cosmicals was basically a wacky workplace drama with space themed characters and surreal humor. It evolved into a higher-stakes story in its second season, while still being a workplace drama. I’m pretty sure the whole thing was a satire of American corporate brands and capitalism, looking back.

Synopsis I found: Stelle Fahrenheit is the only star in The Bubble, the city she recently moved to for a fresh start. She and her coworker/neighbor Lune experience the wonders and horrors of being a mascot for Cosmicorp, as they try to get by in their millennial lives. Join the Cosmicals as they keep up with sales, rise above competition, and avoid usurpation from a bigger corporation… all while finding ways to make their capitalist hellscape a bearable experience.

I’ll try to pull up screencaps of what we found so far for each of the character. I’ll keep updating it if we find more episodes. For some of the characters, my sister volunteered to draw them to the best of her memory. She is quite the artist after all.

Stelle and Lune - The Main Duo

Stelle and Lune were these two next door neighbors who were eventually hired at their company, Cosmicorp, at the same time, thus becoming coworkers as well. They had this mutual disdain for each other, but it was also like …a respectful disdain? Doc Matter, their manager, took advantage of the Stelle and Lune’s clashing personalities to pair them up for mascot marketing shenanigans. Over the course of the series, as I recall, they realize they had a lot more in common than they initially thought.

The Main Characters

Stelle
She was my favorite character when I was growing up!
Stelle was this yellow star who had moved to the city for a fresh start. She was the energetic, happy-go-lucky, and often naively optimistic employee of Cosmicorp’s marketing department. A recurring theme for her was that Stelle would let her coworkers and company walk all over her if it meant she could please them. If my memory serves me right, she was the only star in the city, so she was desperate to make connections.
Lune
Lune, on the other hand, was the grumpy, sarcastic, and constantly depressed secondary mascot of Cosmicorp. Unlike Stelle, he lacked any energy to do anything that didn’t interest him. He would often take the easy way out when he could. Lune considers himself the more sophisticated one of the two… but we’ll be the judge of that! There was a theme throughout the show of him trying to become a better person, but often lacked the commitment to do so. Lune had trouble committing to relationships, intimate or not, and was caught in a cycle of continuously hating himself.
Doc Matter
Doc was Stelle and Lune’s ecstatic manager at the marketing department. There were a handful of episodes that centered him, so you could think of him as the tritagonist of the series. The office viewed him as this funny goofy “dad” of the office. He would get in over his head about capitalizing off the latest marketing trends. However, I’d say he was more addicted to the thrill of doing a good job rather than making a profit, as he had often trapped himself into workaholic patterns.
From what I remember, he had a blind spot about power dynamics in his department. He spent so much time acting like he wasn’t the boss and acted like he was on the same level as the employees. Kind of like… the employee-boss version of the “how do you do fellow kids'' meme. It got kind of weird. He had to consolidate having Stelle and Lune as his friends but also seeing them as these money-making corporate mascots. Don’t be friends with your boss, you guys.
Quanta
Quanta was the assistant manager of the marketing office. While Doc Matter acted as the fun, approachable, and agreeable boss, Quanta had to resort to being the serious joykiller in order to get things done. She was not popular around the office, nor was she usually taken seriously. If Stelle and Lune were like SpongeBob and Squidward, then Quanta was like…. if Squidward had his own Squidward. Quanta would be constantly peeved about Stelle’s naiveness, or Lune’s laziness, and Doc’s favoritism towards the two in the office. Let's just say if she was head manager, things would be a lot different.

Note: All those black-cat looking characters are their own species known as “dark matters”, often shortened as “datters.” Doc Matter is the only one whose name is a pun for that, though.

Other Characters

Hale-Bopp
A shy and nervous intern. I’m assuming this character was introduced to the franchise as an ode to the real-life 1995 comet of the same name. There was a constant running gag of her being melted on-screen by explosive things in the office.
Cookie Dough Planet
A planet who would say bizarrely out of pocket one-liners. There was a recurring gag that the other characters knew his real name but they never said it on screen. They would only call him Cookie Dough Planet.
Venera
I thought she was a planet, but my sister corrected me and told me she’s actually a “brown dwarf. Venera was one of Cosmicorp’s higher ups, and Doc’s supervisor. Doc was always on thin ice with her.
Mrs. Doc Matter
Ok, this is funny. There’s actually two Doc Matters in the show, but this one is an actual doctor. She often appears to treat Stelle and Lune’s spontaneous injuries and bizarre health problems. As it turns out, she and the other Doc Matter are wife and husband.
The Milky Way
The galaxy the characters reside in. To the characters, the Milky Way was an omnipotent god but… they also talk about her like she’s a country they’re proud to live in. Sometimes she would narrate to the audience. Other times she would haunt the characters in their dreams. Weird stuff. I had no idea what the hell they were going for.

Interstellar Inc Characters

Janky Jett
The chaotic ex-mafia member who was hired by Interstellar Inc to tank Cosmicorp. Jett frequently hijacked the Cosmicorp building in order to find ways to run them out of business. Honestly, I think they would be my favorite character now if I could rewatch the show.
Neutrino
He is the nervous janitor at Cosmicorp AND Interstellar Inc. He acted as a mole for Interstellar, and gave away Cosmicorp’s business plans to Jett in secret. He clearly did not like his job and is always on the verge of a mental breakdown.
Lovejoy and Psyche
Across multiple episodes, Jett paired these two up and basically made them the Interstellar Inc version of Stelle and Lune. Psyche was an asteroid, and he is the lead singer of a boy band whose record label was run by Interstellar. Lovejoy was this witchy goth-looking comet who knew a thing or two about supernatural phenomena. If I recall, she was actually personally hired by Quarius.
Mr. Quarius
The main villain of the series. He was the power hungry CEO of Interstellar Inc who was obsessed with buying out every other company in the whole city. He is constantly trying to buy out Cosmicorp and often sends his goons to sabotage them. Jett was his right hand man.
Quarius was extremely two faced; he painted himself as charismatic to the public, but manipulative and possessive of everyone who was too close to him. He had unsavory methods to keep his employees in line. From my memory, scenes involving Quarius were often the most uncomfortable.
Ok. We were trying to look up what the hell he was because me and my sister have no idea. We thought he was some sort of albino datter growing up, but some people on Yahoo answers claim he was a “quasar” ??? Whatever that is.
The Black Hole
Some sort of paranormal creature that Quarius kept. He used it as a weapon whenever he needed to demonstrate his power over his employees. I need to tell you guys this. From what I remember, the interpretation of the black hole in the show looked shockingly similar to the 2019 NASA picture.
The Black Hole
I have no idea how they got the design verbatim back then. Pretty wild.
